Polaris Sensor Technologies, Inc. has the capability to develop a sensor that could provide
pilots with terrain updates immediately preceding brownout. This display would show terrain
obstacles, slope hazards, and new objects not present in prior surveys. Polaris's motivation
for the development of this sensor is for the warfighter. Dangerous brownout occurs in
landing and takeoff conditions and slope hazards are difficult to identify. Polaris Sensor
Technologies, Inc approach to this sensor uses passive stereo range camera. These
camera's create a "virtual world" synthetic scene, which is then displayed to the pilot
entering brownout.
Benefits
- Improved situation awareness
- Real-time update of terrain and obstacles
- Slope hazard identification
- Flexible, multiple viewpoint display
- Fly through ability
- Compatible with additional surveillance platforms
- Image mapped as texture to synthetic terrain
